Hide Those Cords! (And Keep Your Sanity)
Let’s be honest: life is messy, and sometimes our countertops are too. I’m not a total neat freak (well, maybe just a little), but there’s something about a tidy space that makes everything feel a bit more peaceful. I love a kitchen that’s calm, uncluttered, and ready for whatever the day brings—even if that’s just a cup of coffee and a good chat with Alexa.
But every now and then, even the most organized among us get caught off guard by a little chaos. In my case? It was a tangle of cords hiding in plain sight, quietly plotting to disrupt my countertop serenity. And once I saw it, there was no un-seeing it…
The Cord Catastrophe
Picture this: I’m sitting at our kitchen island, happily typing away on my laptop, when my gaze drifts to the corner of the counter. There, in full view, sits our electric tea kettle—cord snaking into the outlet. Right next to it? Alexa, with her cord (and a chunky white outlet box) doing its own acrobatic routine up the side of the cabinet. Two cords, one black, one white, both screaming for attention. How long has this been going on? . . .
Has this cord chaos really been on display for all to see? . . .
NOT ON MY WATCH !!!😅
I had to laugh. Maybe I am mellowing out with age. I’m definitely less bothered by the little things these days. But this? . . . This was a detail I couldn’t ignore. So, as quickly as Amazon Prime could deliver, I sprang into action.
Operation Cord Concealment
Here’s how I tackled the mess:
Tea kettle: Tucked away in a storage cabinet. Out of sight, out of mind!
Alexa: Elevated on a chic footed tray (thanks, Ross!) with her cord cleverly hidden behind a trusty wooden cutting board.
Lighting: Enter a battery-powered lamp (Amazon for the win), adding both height and a cozy glow to the nook.
Finishing touch: I whipped up a custom pleated shade from leftover ticking fabric. (Curious? Check out my blog post on Easy Lampshade Makeovers—it’s faster and easier than you think!)
Cord Clutter Be Gone!
If unsightly cords drive you up the wall, trust me, you’re not alone. There are so many simple tricks to make them disappear—cord covers, trays, baskets, a small potted plant or even a strategically placed cutting board:) And if you’re one of those magical people who can ignore the cord chaos? I salute you. Seriously—teach me your ways!
Problem solved, peace restored, and I can finally get back to work (in a blissfully tidy space).
